Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for an Economic Research Specialist located at a negotiable location.  Position closes September 21, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. This position will report to the Economic Development Manager. 

Position Summary

The Economic Research Specialist works to enhance the quality of life in NPPD's service area and to increase NPPD’s financial performance by performing economic development research, maintaining and organizing economic development related databases, and adapting new and emerging technology to support economic development programs and activities.  Supports NPPD's economic development activities as well as the economic development programs of NPPD community and power district customers. Economic research activities focus on identifying and supporting actions which would contribute to improving economic conditions, generating increased employment, and attracting, appropriate new electric load to NPPD's service area.


Responsible for economic development activities including development and maintenance of searchable databases, economic development website, and online communications between customers and prospects.  Responsible for research, analysis and preparation of data, studies and reports for customers and prospect as requested.  Essential to achieve high level of customer satisfaction and trust.

Education, Training and Experience

Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, economics, marketing, data management/administration, community and regional planning, or related field and 5 years' experience as described below required. A Masters Degree, or working towards an advanced degree is preferred. A background in research or statistics is desirable. Formal training in economic development practices is desired.  (Individuals in this position should have completed a Basic Economic Development Course and Economic Development Institute (EDI) or be working toward completion of such training).


Experience working with economic development or community-based organizations, public speaking/presentations, and working with data analysis and presentation software is required. Experience with online data applications, database software such as R or Access, experience with geographic information systems and website development preferred.  Experience with federal and state economic development related resources and programs; experience with economic feasibility analysis of development projects, including economic impact analysis and industrial location studies is preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications

Professional certification by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) as a certified economic developer is preferred (CEcD).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Perform research and analysis to identify industries and businesses to be targeted in NPPD's Economic Development programs.  Provide local development organizations with industry targeting analysis and the development of business recruitment strategies.


Prepare studies and analysis for businesses and industries targeted by NPPD's economic development marketing programs and by our community and power district customers. Analysis should focus on quantifying the competitive advantages of NPPD's service area and the service areas of utility customers for new and expanding business and industry facilities.


Research, analyzes data, and prepares economic reports for industrial prospects. Presents complex economic development materials to diverse audiences.


Participate in the development and maintenance of a comprehensive economic and demographic database for NPPD's service area, including an online electronic searchable database for site selection data, and printed and electronic information documenting the locational advantages of NPPD's service area for new and expanding businesses. Identify and plan the implementation of emerging technologies to enhance or replace existing databases and the Economic Development website.


Monitor demographic and economic conditions in NPPD's service area. Conduct specialized research for external and internal customers, including the analysis of economic impacts associated with development activities, analysis of regional and local economic conditions and trends, and other economic research activities necessary to support economic development in NPPD's service area.  Participate in the maintenance of the Economic Development Performance Measurement System (EDMS).


Participate in the ongoing development and evaluation of strategic initiatives to develop and deliver economic development information. Ensure online applications are appropriate for business goals, marketing position, and external visitors.  Participate in programs to make online data and information available to NPPD's customer base, including the support and continued development of the economic development web site (

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. 

Pay Grade - Exempt 13 Monthly

Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $6,260.90  - $7,826.12 per month


Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska)  Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
