Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Welder/Mechanic III located at Cooper Nuclear Station in Brownville, Nebraska.  Position closes Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. 

 

Position Summary

Accomplish welding activities on both non-safety and safety-related components by performance of preventative maintenance, predictive maintenance and planned and unplanned corrective maintenance to ensure safe and reliable operation of Cooper Nuclear Station. Be available when required to ensure an adequate pool of manpower to correct plant problems.

Mechanic/Welder position will primarily be responsible for preparing and welding components/equipment essential to maintaining plant equipment and other miscellaneous items to support the safe and reliable operation of CNS.

Education, Training and Experience

Candidate selected for this position must pass a Power Plant Maintenance Positions Selection System (MASS) test.

Associate's degree in a welder discipline or related field, or equivalent military training.

OR

High school diploma/GED and a minimum of four (4) years of experience as a welder in an industrial setting or successful completion of a welder apprentice program.

Must be qualified to ANSI N18.1-1971 requirements. (Documentation of qualification is a condition of employment.)

Experience with SMAW and GTAW, (Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel and GTAW Aluminum), brazing and soldering. Oxygen-acetylene both, manual and track torch. Pipe welding experience preferred.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Ensure efficient and reliable operation of station equipment through performance of preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, corrective maintenance and troubleshooting activities on non-safety and safety-related plant equipment.

Perform investigation of failures/deficiencies on plant equipment with Engineering Department, Shop Supervisor and vendor in order to correct problems and improve reliability of plant equipment.

Perform quality control (QC) activities on work performed at the station as required by ANSI 45.2.6-1978 to attain or maintain the physical aspects of quality within predetermined limits or requirements.

Participate in the Maintenance Training Program as required to maintain qualifications and to achieve and demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to perform Mechanic duties.

Continually improve the quality of mechanical maintenance/welding procedures through the established feedback and revision processes.

Support Cooper Nuclear Station's Emergency Response Organization (ERO) through qualification to fill Maintenance Operational Support Center (OSC) or other ERO positions required (dependent on physical qualifications).

Perform pipe prepping and weld fit-up.

Incumbent may participate on Safety Committee.

Incumbent may participate on Employee Committee.

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range.  Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.

Welder/Mechanic III     Non-Exempt pay grade 11: $36.15/hour - $42.44/hour

Welder/Mechanic II      Non-Exempt pay grade 13: $46.73/hour - $51.68/hour

Welder/Mechanic I       Non-Exempt pay grade 14: $56.82/hour

Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska)  Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
