Aviation Manager/Chief Pilot

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Aviation Manager/Chief Pilot located at the Columbus General Office in Columbus.  Position closes October 25, 2019.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for providing safe and efficient air transportation to support District business and business partner needs. This includes piloting the aircraft when required, managing flight operations in a safe and cost effective manner. Supervises the aircraft maintenance programs.  Periodic analysis of the cost effectiveness of air transportation will be required. The accountability of this position will be based on safety performance, cost effectiveness of services, and internal customer satisfaction.  The incumbent is subject to random drug testing under NPPD’s Fitness for Duty Program.   The incumbent will be required to live within 10 miles of the District’s hangar and is expected to respond to emergencies, travel, and work a flexible schedule including holidays, weekends, and early or late hours.

Education, Training and Experience

High School diploma and two years of aviation management experience, or Bachelor’s degree and one year of supervisory experience required.

3,000 total hours, 2,000 multi-pilot in command, 1,000 turbo prop required.

King Air Currency and Experience preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications

Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with Instrument, multi-engine ratings required.  FAA Second Class Medical required. Airframe and/or Power Plant mechanic license preferred.

National  Business Aviation Administration (NBAA) Certified Aviation Manager rating preferred, attain in four years required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Supervise and schedule pilots and maintenance personnel and act as Pilot in Command or Second in command for scheduled flights piloted.  Maintain all necessary aircraft, pilot, schedule, billing, and maintenance records.


Comply with all applicable regulations and manufacturer requirements, manage and execute District/Department procedures as well as the daily department operations and maintenance program for the District and business partner aircraft.


Make scheduling and operational decisions necessary for starting, delaying, or canceling flights when conditions dictate based upon information gathered from weather briefings, airport conditions, aircraft availability, staffing, and pre-flight inspections.


Prepare and be accountable for the Aviation operating budget and oversee the Hangar.


Supervise the maintenance programs and the schedules of Aviation department personnel and/or outside maintenance providers in a manner compliant with manufacturer and industry timelines and standards, assist with maintenance on aircraft as needed, and oversee the procurement of parts and supplies for aircraft.


Provide excellent customer service and perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations Support and as needed to provide safe and efficient air transportation to support District business and business partner needs.

Salary Information: $8,281-$10,665 Monthly 


Travel Required: More than 75% (With frequent overnight stays, more than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska)  Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
