Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for an Employment Law Attorney located at Columbus General Office in Columbus, Nebraska.   Hybrid telecommuting options may be available for candidates located within 2 hours of Columbus.  Position closes July 5, 2021 at 11:59 Central Time. This position is part of NPPD's Office of General Counsel which consists of five attorneys.  

 

Position Summary

This position provides legal advice to the District in a competent, ethical, timely, and cost efficient manner and assures the District's compliance with applicable legal obligations and  legal rights.

The successful candidate should have a strong background in employment law & human resource matters.  The current attorney has also worked extensively on contractual/statutory matters relating to the District's retail business as well as several other subject areas.  Preferred additional areas of practice include legal experience advising governmental subdivisions or electric utility practice.

Education, Training and Experience

Undergraduate Degree and Graduate of an accredited law school.

Entry level of position and pay grade for the position will be based on years of experience in the applicable practice areas and/or experience working as an attorney for an electric utility.

 

Licenses and/or Certifications

Admitted to practice law in the State of Nebraska or can quickly gain admission.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Staff Attorney I

Assist District management by reviewing and providing legal advice on all employment law related issues.  Staff Attorney shall further provide reliable, accurate, and timely advice involving legal matters as assigned by the General Counsel which may inclue the following practice areas:  business regulation, bankruptcy, administrative law, the law of governmental subdivisions and laws involving information technology.  Other areas of responsibility may be assigned as appropriate.

 

Serve as an effective counselor, advocate, and negotiator to assist the District in meeting its operational goals and objectives. Coordinate outside counsel as required.

 

Commonly performed activities include provision of legal advice regarding proposed legislation/rulemaking, legal compliance, investigations/enforcement actions, litigation, contracts and legal research.

 

Provides understanding of principles and concepts applicable to the practice of law in a corporate or governmental setting and in all ways behaves in an ethical manner.  Demonstrates sound legal reasoning and analytical skills; Is thorough, accurate, and precise in research and advice; Practices clear, informative, communication in speech and writing; Keeps interested and responsible parties informed of the status of projects and assignments; Demonstrates basic respect for diverse personalities and expresses tact and courtesy in dealing with all persons; and demonstrates interest in self-development, takes and gives constructive criticism, and accepts challenges of work in unfamiliar areas.

Staff Attorney II and III

Demonstrates a high level of competence in all the areas included in Staff Attorney profile and additionally provides the following: Handles complex or sensitive issues or projects with minimal supervision, effectively and efficiently, including the use of outside counsel and support personnel; Demonstrates and formulates ethical, innovative, practical legal solutions to the District's business, both independently and as a participant in a group; Expresses maturity of judgment that reflects  considered thought and focus; Works well under pressure; and Effectively handles a diverse workload with reasonable priorities, diligence, and organization.

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. 

Pay Grade -   14 Exempt - Staff Attorney I

                       15 Exempt - Staff Attorney II

                       16 Exempt - Staff Attorney III

Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $7,082 - $9,030/month - Staff Attorney I

                                                                        $8,127 - $10,362/month - Staff Attorney II

                                                                        $9,324 - $11,888/month - Staff Attorney III 

Travel Required: Will vary by location of successful candidate.  Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
