Engineering Supervisor - Controls & Automation

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Engineering Supervisor - Controls & Automation located at Columbus General Office in Columbus, Nebraska.  Position closes February 23 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. 

This position will report to the Engineering Manager - Delivery.

Position Summary

This position is accountable for providing leadership, technical direction and policy administration for engineering activities related to Controls and Automation. Expectations will be to develop engineering excellence, meet business needs/requirements, exceed customer expectations and continuously develop employee competencies.

Provide direct supervision to the Controls and Automation engineering group within T&D Engineering. Review and approve technical designs/studies, work packets, automation programming, make work assignments, evaluate staff performance and recommend salary adjustments, provide training and be a contact point for interfacing with internal and external work groups associated with controls and automation design functions and tasks.

Education, Training and Experience

Bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering is required.

Five to seven years in transmission operations, engineering or general utility operations is required. Three years of supervisory experience is preferred. Demonstrated leadership and design skills in previous work experiences are preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications

Nebraska Registered Professional Electrical Engineer is required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Provide supervision and leadership for engineering excellence in the Controls and Automation group.  Provide leadership and be available for abnormal system conditions such as storms, system outages, etc.

Supervise the Controls and Automation engineering team and apply all Human Resource policies and procedures.

Advanced understanding and utilization of the SAP tool and the associated EBS processes. Develop knowledge and provide guidance/training to team members for new technologies such as the new document management system and the Bluebeam software tool.

Establish and maintain excellent working relations with the other areas of Operations, other internal staff of NPPD, along with external customers of NPPD. Support NERC compliance and regulatory issues as required.

Recruit, develop and coach employees in technical, customer service and work management areas.

Develop team budget and requirements to assist with the departmental budgets. Create, monitor and maintain appropriate performance goals and measurements for the team to determine if goals are being met efficiently. 

Assist in developing and maintaining engineering standards for the team to ensure the consistency of projects that are being created.

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range.  Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.

Pay Grade - 16 Monthly

Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $10,503.00  - $13,392.00

Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska)  Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.

Retirement Savings

NPPD employees may participate in two retirement plan options – a 401(k) plan and a 457(b) plan. Both plans allow for pre-tax or Roth contributions. After the first six months of employment, the 401(k) plan includes a generous matching contribution from NPPD. The five-year vesting period begins on an employee’s hire date. Our retired employees are eligible for retiree healthcare benefits as well as a life benefit paid out to designated beneficiaries upon their passing.
