Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Industrial Hygienist located at Columbus General Office, Norfolk Operations Center, North Platte Office, Sheldon Station, York Operations Center in Various/Negotiable, Nebraska.  Position closes July 29th, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. 

This position will report to the Occupational Health Services Manager.

Position Summary

The Industrial Hygienist supports occupational health and safety efforts across the District by identifying, evaluating, and controlling chemical, physical, and biological exposures in the workplace. This role is focused on technical field work, employee exposure monitoring, ergonomic health risk mitigation, and support for safe work practices related to industrial processes in power generation, transmission, and distribution environments.

Education, Training and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, Occupational Health, or a related science (e.g., biology, chemistry, physics)

3+ years of field industrial hygiene experience, preferably in utilities, manufacturing, or construction

Related Experience:

Demonstrated experience conducting ergonomic assessments

Proficiency with IH sampling equipment and OSHA/NIOSH analytical methods

Strong understanding of occupational exposure limits and health-based risk evaluation

Familiarity with utility operations (e.g., substations, generating stations, line work) preferred

Licenses and/or Certifications

Certification or eligibility as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)

Certification in ergonomics or human factors preferred, and demonstrated experience is highly desirable.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Perform field sampling and exposure monitoring for airborne contaminants (e.g., asbestos, welding fumes, silica, solvents, combustion by products, mold, biological, etc.)

Conduct physical hazard monitoring for noise, heat stress, electromagnetic fields (EMF), and other workplace hazards

Utilize direct-reading instruments and laboratory sampling techniques following OSHA/NIOSH standards

Interpret results and assess potential exposures against OSHA PELs, ACGIH TLVs, NIOSH and ANSI recommendations and internal health guidelines

Communicate relevant sample data and collaborate with the Environmental Department as needed.

Assist generation facilities in identifying potential exposure hazards during routine and outage activities

Provide field-level recommendations for exposure mitigation, including engineering and administrative controls

Support confined space entry assessments with atmospheric testing and ventilation recommendations

Provide technical IH support during outages, demolition, remediation, or construction involving new potential exposures

Serve as the lead coordinator for the District’s ergonomic health program

Accountable for other duties as assigned.

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range.  Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.

 

Pay Grade - 13 Monthly

Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $7,053.00  - $8,816.00

 

Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska)  Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.

Retirement Savings

NPPD employees may participate in two retirement plan options – a 401(k) plan and a 457(b) plan. Both plans allow for pre-tax or Roth contributions. After the first six months of employment, the 401(k) plan includes a generous matching contribution from NPPD. The five-year vesting period begins on an employee’s hire date.
