Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Land Surveying Intern located at the Columbus General Office in Columbus, Nebraska.  Position closes May 6, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. This position can support up to 20-30 hours per week during the school year, depending on student availability, and 40 hours per week when school is not in session.

 

Position Summary

 

The Land Surveying Intern assists in conducting surveys and collecting field data for use in the engineering design and monitoring of NPPD facilities in addition to providing construction staking for various projects. The intern also assists in generating drawings, maps, plats, and legal documents, and assists in performing the computation of survey data to support design criteria. This position requires occasional overnight travel to be discussed during the interview process.

Education, Training and Experience

 

The intern must be enrolled in an accredited two‑year or four‑year college/university in a Land Surveying degree program carrying a minimum of 12 semester units or eight quarter units with freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior standing must maintain enrollment throughout the internship. The internship/training must be in the student's field of study. College credit may apply to some internships.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

 

Assist in providing field staking for various types of construction projects such as electric line installation or substation grading and footings, water system/renewable energy facilities, power plant facilities, and other District owned facilities including telecommunications or natural gas line.

 

Assist in conducting surveys to monitor various equipment and other NPPD facilities throughout the state.

 

Provide support to accurately compile field data, prepare survey notes, and process and compute field data to be used in cross-sections, plan and profiles, contour maps (including digital surface models), plats, or monitoring data reports as necessary to support customer needs. 

 

Assist in compiling survey record research including section corner abstract information and limited title research.

 

Assist with surveying properties with existing and proposed facilities to generate maps, survey plats, and legal descriptions.

 

Assist in conducting monitoring surveys and compiling reports and maps. Assist in using precision survey equipment for power plant, substation, and water systems/renewable energy facility monitoring surveys.

 

Provide assistance for alignment and elevation control surveys, including the use of precision survey equipment, for power plant, substation and water systems/renewable energy facilities.

 

Assist in conducting ground-based 3D scan surveys for facility mapping (including preliminary surveys), identifying manufacturer design defects, electrical line clearance and sag checks, and as-builts. Establish survey control and ensure all data is survey quality.

 

Assist in conducting Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry and LiDAR surveys for facility mapping (including preliminary surveys), electrical line clearance & sag checks, and as-builts. UAV pilot must have a current FAA (Part 107) Remote Pilot Certificate and ensure all operations are conducted safely and in compliance with applicable rules and laws. Assist in conducting mission planning and obtain airspace authorization. Assist in establishing survey control and ensure all data is survey quality.

 

Assist in providing technical support to other District business units using survey equipment.

 

Assist in conducting field survey grade checks and validates substation grading is in adherence to contract documents and drawings.

 

Assist in conducting bathymetric surveys.

 

Assist in ensuring proper maintenance and repair of survey equipment.

Salary Information - $18.16 - $20.96 per hour

 

Travel Required: 25% to 50% (With frequent overnight stays, more than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska)  Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.

Salary

Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. In addition to the base salary listed in posting, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range.

Retirement Savings

NPPD employees may participate in two retirement plan options – a 401(k) plan and a 457(b) plan. Both plans allow for pre-tax or Roth contributions. After the first six months of employment, the 401(k) plan includes a generous matching contribution from NPPD. The five-year vesting period begins on an employee’s hire date.
