Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for an Engineer OR Engineering Technician OR Engineering Specialist (Delivery) located at the Doniphan Control Center in Doniphan.  Position closes December 1, 2020.


This position will report to the Doniphan Transmission System Control Supervisor.

Position Summary

Transmission System Control Engineer III/II/I OR Engineering Technician III OR Engineering Specialist IV/V


Note: Level I to Level III Engineer is considered a progression and is approved by the appropriate manager.  All NPPD engineering positions are managed under the NPPD Engineering Technical Career Path document.


Position provides daily support for operations and maintenance, trending system performance and initiating actions to restore/improve system performance and reliability, troubleshooting off-normal system conditions, failure and root cause analysis, evaluation of proposed configuration changes, recommendations to maintain asset value, and coordination of maintenance-related projects.


In addition to the general engineering activities above, job-specific knowledge and expectations for this individual role will include:

Provides engineering support to the Transmission System Control Department. This position is responsible for an extremely critical part of NPPD's transmission and generation operations and is expected to be available at all hours of the day in the event of emergencies.  This position is responsible for developing network models in NPPD’s Energy Management System and conducting operating studies in support of real-time operations.  This position is also responsible for maintaining the power system model portion of the Operator Training Simulator. Incumbent will become immersed in all aspects of the Transmission System Control department.

Education, Training and Experience

Note: Level I to Level III Engineer is considered a progression and is approved by the appropriate manager. 


All Engineer Levels: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university is required OR Professional Engineering License and Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a Non-ABET accredited school is required.


Engineer Level I: 

Entry level position with assignments designed to develop general knowledge of professional engineering practice in the electric utility industry and introduce customer/supplier communication skills.


Engineer Level II:

Second level position with assignments designed to develop competent technical knowledge within an engineering discipline, develop customer relations skills, and introduce project management skills.


Engineer Level III:

A fully competent engineer in conventional aspects within the specific discipline with expertise in specific areas of past assignments. Assignments designed to expand the areas of expertise within the discipline, develop project management skills, and develop a general knowledge of other disciplines.


Engineering Technician III / Engineering Specialist IV or V:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field OR Associate's Degree in a technical science-related discipline

Training and experience requirements fall under the umbrella of NPPD’s Non-Nuclear Engineering Technician Career Path.  Specific requirements for Engineering Technician (Level, I, II, III) and Engineering Specialist (Level IV and V) are specified in the career path standard.

Licenses and/or Certifications

All positions and all levels – establish and maintain acceptable NERC Security Background check.

PE certification preferred.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

<span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Engineering Studies<span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">: Develop and maintain network model used in NPPD’s Energy Management System.  Analyze the feasibility of planned outages combinations with respect to NERC Reliability Standards. Research - Obtain field data; Investigate new technology; Review regulatory requirements; Analysis – Develop action plans for next day operations.  Develop operational strategies for real-time operations for planned system conditions. Reporting - Write technical reports; Present reports.


<span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Modification or New Construction Projects<span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">: Design and implement new construction projects or modifications to existing equipment or systems. Design - Obtain field data; Perform field inspection of facilities; Secure proper permitting and permissions; Utilize drawings; Develop design requirements; Prepare design calculations; Utilize technical software; Review and apply design standards and codes; Review and apply regulatory requirements; Research new equipment technology; Develop drawings and material lists


<span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Operations & Maintenance Support<span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">: Provide technical support to the operation and maintenance of existing equipment or systems. Troubleshooting - Analyze problems (Root Cause Analysis); Subject matter expert. Inspections - Perform equipment condition assessments; Perform system assessments; Establish guidelines; Provide outage support; Provide subject matter expertise. Performance - Develop test procedures for equipment; Develop operating procedures; Conduct performance testing; Interpret and analyzes results.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (Continued)

Customer Relations: Continuously support the customers' business needs. Communication - Know the customers' needs; Provide project status; Maintain effective customer contact. Project Development - Market yourself, the department, and the company.


Project Management: Provide technical and administrative leadership to projects and project teams. Project Engineering - Coordinate team activities with other entities; Direct a multi-discipline project team; Develop cost estimates; Develop project schedules; Control project budget; Prepare project scoping document. Administrative - Report on team activities.


Consulting: Provide technical direction or input to others. Mentoring - Provide direction to less experienced individual.  Subject Matter Expert - Provide technical leadership within specific areas of expertise; Develop or review technical feasibility of proposed solutions.

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. 

Engineer Level I - Exempt Pay Grade 12: $5,777-$7,297 monthly

Engineer Level II - Exempt Pay Grade 13: $6,480-$8,184 monthly

Engineer Level III - Exempt Pay Grade 14: $7,368-$9,490 monthly

Engineering Technician (Level III) - Non-Exempt Pay Grade 12: $5,777-$7,297 monthly

Engineering Specialist (Level IV) -  Exempt Pay Grade 13: $6,480-$8,184 monthly

Engineering Specialist (Level V) - Exempt Pay Grade 14: $7,368-$9,490 monthly


Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska)  Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
