Transmission System Control Engineer I, II or III

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Transmission System Control Engineer I, II or III located at Doniphan Control Center in Doniphan.  Position closes December 13, 2019.

Position Summary

Note: Level I to Level III Engineer is considered a progression and is approved by the appropriate manager.  All NPPD engineering positions are managed under the NPPD Engineering Technical Career Path document. 

 

Position provides daily support for operations and maintenance, trending system performance and initiating actions to restore/improve system performance and reliability, troubleshooting off-normal system conditions, failure and root cause analysis, evaluation of proposed configuration changes, recommendations to maintain asset value, and coordination of maintenance-related projects.

 

In addition to the general engineering activities above, job-specific knowledge and expectations for this indivdiual role will include:

 

Provides engineering support to the Transmission System Control Department. This position is responsible for an extremely critical part of NPPD's transmission and generation operations and is expected to be available at all hours of the day in the event of emergencies.This position is responsible for developing network models in NPPD’s Energy Management System and conducting operating studies in support of real-time operations.  This position is also responsible for maintaining the power system model portion of the Operator Training Simulator. Incumbent will become immersed in all aspects of the Transmission System Control department.

Education, Training and Experience

Level I:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university is required OR Professional Engineering License and Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from a Non-ABET accredited school is required.

 

Entry level position with assignments designed to develop general knowledge of professional engineering practice in the electric utility industry and introduce customer/supplier communication skills.

 

Level II:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited university or college OR Professional Engineering License obtained by accredited examination.

 

Second level position with assignments designed to develop competent technical knowledge within an engineering discipline, develop customer relations skills, and introduce project management skills. Demonstrated ability to perform the duties of a Level I Engineer (Level I).

•General knowledge of professional engineering practice.
•General knowledge of business unit engineered systems and equipment.
•General knowledge of accepted codes, regulations, and standards pertinent to the business unit.

 

Level III:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited university or college OR Professional Engineering License obtained by accredited examination.

 

A fully competent engineer in conventional aspects within the specific discipline with expertise in specific areas of past assignments. Assignments designed to expand the areas of expertise within the discipline, develop project management skills, and develop a general knowledge of other disciplines. Demonstrated ability to perform the duties of a Level II Engineer (Level 2).

•Ability to apply engineering economic principles.
•Knowledge of business unit engineered systems and equipment.
•Detailed knowledge of codes, regulations, and standards pertinent to the business unit.
•Ability to write technical specifications.
•Ability to effectively direct a project team.

Licenses and/or Certifications

PE certification preferred - Level I, II, III

                       

Establish and maintain acceptable NERC Security Background check - All Levels.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

 

Engineering Studies - Level I,II,III

  • Develop and maintain network model used in NPPD’s Energy Management System.
  • Analyze the feasibility of planned outages combinations with respect to NERC Reliability Standards. 
  • Research - Obtain field data; Investigate new technology; Review regulatory requirements; 
  •  Analysis – Develop action plans for next day operations.  Develop operational strategies for real-time operations for planned system conditions.
  • Reporting - Write technical reports; Present reports

 

Modification or New Construction Projects - Level I,II,III

  • Design and implement new construction projects or modifications to existing equipment or systems.
  • Design - Obtain field data; Perform field inspection of facilities; Secure proper permitting and permissions; Utilize drawings; Develop design requirements; Prepare design calculations; Utilize technical software; Review and apply design standards and codes; Review and apply regulatory requirements; Research new equipment technology; Develop drawings and material lists
  • Procurement - Prepare technical specifications; Evaluate proposals; Prepare purchase documents; Expedite delivery; Inspect project materials; Administer contracts
  • Implementation - Coordinate activities with other entities; Prepare installation procedure; Develop acceptance criteria; Inspect construction; Support equipment/system startup; Update drawings and lists; Provide training on O&M
  • Project Management - Prepare project scoping document; Report on team activities; Develop cost estimates; Develop project schedules; Control project budget; Direct project team
Operations & Maintenance Support - Level I,II,III
  • Provide technical support to the operation and maintenance of existing equipment or systems.
  • Troubleshooting - Analyze problems (Root Cause Analysis); Subject matter expert
  • Inspections - Perform equipment condition assessments; Perform system assessments; Establish guidelines; Provide outage support; Provide subject matter expertise
  • Performance - Develop test procedures for equipment; Develop operating procedures; Conduct performance testing; Interpret and analyzes results

 

Customer Relations - Level II,III

  • Continuously support the customers' business needs.
  • Communication - Know the customers' needs; Provide project status; Maintain effective customer contact
  • Project Development - Market yourself, the department, and the company 
Project Management - Level III
  • Provide technical and administrative leadership to projects and project teams.
  • Project Engineering - Coordinate team activities with other entities; Direct a multi-discipline project team; Develop cost estimates; Develop project schedules; Control project budget; Prepare project scoping document
  • Administrative - Report on team activities

 

Consulting - Level III

  • Provide technical direction or input to others.
  • Mentoring - Provide direction to less experienced individuals
  • Subject Matter Expert - Provide technical leadership within specific areas of expertise; Develop or review technical feasibility of proposed solutions

Salary Information: 

$5,658-$7,147 Monthly 

 

Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska)  Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
