Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Engineering Intern - Summer 2025 located at Sheldon Station in Hallam, Nebraska.  Position closes October 31, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.  

 

This position will report to the Sheldon Station Engineering Manager.

Position Summary

Nebraska Public Power District is seeking an engineering student to work with and assist other experienced engineering staff in the Engineering Department at Sheldon Station. Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Structural, or other relevant engineering disciplines are acceptable.  The duration of the internship will be May 2025 to August 2025, based on school calendar dates.

 

Sheldon Station is located northeast of Hallam, Nebraska, and is a short drive from Lincoln, Nebraska.  Sheldon Station consists of two (105 and 120) megawatt coal fired units, and also houses a standalone 56-megawatt dual fuel combustion turbine capable of operation on either natural gas or liquid fuel.

 

Sheldon Station's history includes construction and operation of a sodium graphite nuclear steam generator as part of initial construction in the early 1960's. It has remained in continuous operation since then with numerous configuration changes to meet ever changing economic and regulatory requirements.

 

The Engineering Department at Sheldon Station has responsibilities including daily support for operations and maintenance, trending system performance and initiating actions to restore/improve system performance and reliability, troubleshooting off-normal system conditions, failure and root cause analysis, evaluation of proposed configuration changes, recommendations to maintain asset value, capital project management and coordination of maintenance-related projects.

Education, Training and Experience

The student must be pursuing an engineering degree from an ABET accredited college/university.

At a minimum, the student must be finishing their sophomore year of college. 

Licenses and/or Certifications

None.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

-Assist Plant Engineers with equipment troubleshooting

-Obtain field data

-Utilize drawings and prepare drawing revisions

-Update plant records

-Trend equipment performance data

-Research equipment/component replacement and upgrade options

-Assist Plant Engineers with project field implementation and contractor oversight

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range.  Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.

 

Starting Wage

Sophomore $23.47 per hour

Junior $25.27 per hour

Senior $27.08 per hour

 

Travel Required: None  Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
