Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Mechanical Technician located at Sheldon Station in Hallam, Nebraska. Position closes February 10, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.
This position will report to the Sheldon Station Mechanical Maintenance Manager.
Position Summary
The Mechanical technician is responsible to maintain and repair two turbine-generators, boilers, and all related systems used in a generating facility. In addition, they will fabricate parts with machine tools and metallurgy, as well as provide the primary skill set for all welding, preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance for Sheldon Station.
Education, Training and Experience
Incumbent must be recommended based on the Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) results.
Two-year Associates Degree in a mechanical discipline or related field (Mechanical Maintenance Technology, Tool & Die, Welding, etc.) AND three years of experience as a mechanic in an industrial setting OR equivalent military training AND three years of experience as a mechanic in an industrial setting OR a high school diploma (or GED) and either: 1) a minimum of five years' experience as a mechanic in an industrial setting, or 2) completion of a mechanical apprentice program, or 3) other work experience or demonstrated performance indicating that the applicant has the skills and ability to perform the required duties of the position.
Demonstrated ability to perform welding - MIG, TIG, oxygen - acetylene, SMAW welding and 2000 lbs. "R" stamp pressure welding and auxiliary equipment and pipe fitting is extremely desirable. Ability to perform plate and non-R Stamp tube welding preferred. Prior experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems is desirable. Prior experience with courses in basic electricity, mechanics, blueprint and schematic reading, pneumatics and hydraulics is extremely desirable.
Licenses and/or Certifications
All individuals holding this position shall pass a physical as required by the Federal EPA for asbestos and lead abatement work, and will be required to comply with all workers training testing, and licensing required by the Federal EPA, State of Nebraska, and local government, regarding asbestos and lead abatement work.
Certain individuals within the Mechanical Technician position will be required to be a certified welder who has passed a 6 G hi-pressure pipe welding certification test. Management discretion will be utilized in maintaining an appropriate number of certified technicians.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Perform preventative and corrective maintenance, as well as equipment installation of plant mechanical equipment, including a wide variety of air compressors, pumps, valves and related systems. Maintain chemical and acid systems.
This position is required to perform asbestos and lead abatement, as required by the Federal EPA, State of Nebraska, and local government. Other non-asbestos insulation removal and re-insulation is also required.
Maintain records on equipment. Read precision measuring tools such as micrometers, dial indicators, laser alignment equipment, etc. Perform welding skills, machine skills, and fabrication for repair, replacement, or additions of plant equipment.
Maintain and improve station reliability by performing investigations and troubleshooting failures and deficiencies of plant equipment. Partner with other departments, vendors, etc. as needed to ensure successful completion of this responsibility.
Provide technical direction and or lead a work crew of full-time or part-time employees, or contract employees as necessary. Depending upon experience and capability this position could provide technical direction for other employees on a regular basis.

In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range. Pay Grade - 13
Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $39.50 - $49.38
Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska) Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
