Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has 5 openings for an Apprentice Line Technician Intern - Distribution for the summer  of 2026 to be located out of the Kearney Operations Center in Kearney, NE, the Norfolker Operations Center in Norfolk, NE, the Plattsmouth Office in Plattsmouth, NE, the South Sioux City Office in South Sioux City, NE, and the York Operations Center in York, NE.  Position closes October 31 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. 

 

 

 

Position Summary

The Internship's function is to learn and mentor from experienced line technicians in the field for a period of time starting mid-May through mid-August 2026. Incumbent must have successfully completed their first year of school with an accredited institution in Utility Line and must be required to complete an internship as part of the program curriculum.

 

The Internship student will climb wood poles to perform repairs, maintenance and construction duties as required to ensure effective operation of NPPD's Distribution and Subtransmission Grid system, in a safe and efficient manner. Incumbent must be certified to climb through courses offered at school. Some overnight travel will be required. A Class A CDL license is preferred prior to and throughout the duration of the internship program.

 

Incumbent will be required to complete a background check, physical, and drug screen prior to starting with the District. Incumbent will be required to report wearing safety shoes that meet ASTM F2413-05 specifications.

Education, Training and Experience

The incumbent must have successfully completed the first semester of college in the Utility Line program at either Metro Community College or Northeast Community College. Incumbent must be certified to climb through an accredited institution.

Licenses and/or Certifications

Class A CDL required at the start of employment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Ascend and descend wood poles at any height to perform work as required in a safe and productive manner with supervision.

 

Concentrate and be fully aware of responsibilities while on patrol of distribution and subtransmission lines within the grid system.

 

Maintain favorable public relations with property owners, other District personnel, business establishments, and customers.

 

Safely operate and maintain tools and equipment assigned, according to District policies and procedures. Operate and maintain mobile and hydraulic aerial equipment associated with construction and maintenance including digger derricks.

 

Incumbent is accountable for miscellaneous other responsibilities as assigned or required.

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range.  Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.

Pay Grade - 99 Hourly

Typical Pay Grade Starting Salary Range: $24.80/hour 

 

Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska)  Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.

Retirement Savings

NPPD employees may participate in two retirement plan options – a 401(k) plan and a 457(b) plan. Both plans allow for pre-tax or Roth contributions. After the first six months of employment, the 401(k) plan includes a generous matching contribution from NPPD. The five-year vesting period begins on an employee’s hire date.
