Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Sub-Transmission & Distribution System Control Operator Apprentice OR Operator II OR Operator I located at Kearney Operations Center in Kearney, Nebraska.  Position closes October 25, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. 

 

This position will report to te Sub-Transmission & Distribution System Control Operator Team Leader.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of NPPD's jointly operated Sub-Transmission system (69kV and 34.5kV), and Distribution systems in the District's multi-substation system (includes system control, system security, operations, retail load optimization systems, Power On, Outage Management System and SCADA system.) The incumbent will coordinate personnel and system strategies for outages during both normal and emergency operations and take actions necessary to maintain a safe, reliable, and efficient system.

 

The incumbent will be required to successfully complete the requirements of the System Operator Progression Program.

 

In addition, individuals in this position are expected to live within 30 minutes of the Kearney Control Center, in the event of a call-in.

 

Apprentice Operator is the entry level and a pay grade 12. Operator II is pay grade 12, Operator I is pay grade 13, and Senior Operator is pay grade 13. All title and pay grade changes are normally managed through the progression program.

 

Education, Training and Experience

Technical School degree in related electrical field (OR) High School Diploma/GED plus 3 years related electrical experience as indicated below.

 

Related Experience:  Utility line, substations, commercial/residential/industrial electrical, utility power plant operations, electrical engineering, telecommunications, electronics, utility system control, power system planning, electric utility engineering technician.

 

Note: A Bachelor’s degree in a related field may be considered/substituted for up to 3 years (maximum) of the related electrical experience requirement.

 

Applicants may be placed into the Sub-transmission & Distribution System Control Operator Progression Program.

 

Other work experience or demonstrated performance indicating that the applicant has the skills and ability to perform the duties of the position may be substituted for the specified years of experience and/or education.

 

Licenses and/or Certifications

Apprentice Operator - Entry level position; incumbent responsible for meeting probationary requirements within NPPD's Sub-transmission & Distribution System Control Operator progression program.

 

Establish and maintain acceptable NERC Security Background check.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Control switching of Sub-Transmission and Distribution lines and associated substation equipment in a manner that will not jeopardize the safety of personnel and equipment. Verify switching orders are correct prior to execution.

 

Monitor and control distribution lines and substations to react to changes in system requirements due to variations in system load conditions and other factors while ensuring they are operated within established limits and guidelines. This includes response to emergency conditions such as loss of transmission, sub-transmission, distribution lines, and/or substation facilities. Remain abreast of the status of the high voltage transmission system (NPPD and neighboring systems) that impacts the Sub-Transmission and Distribution systems.

 

Evaluate and respond to unplanned outages on the joint sub-transmission systems and NPPD's distribution systems utilizing the District's outage management system (Power On) and the Distribution SCADA system (ACS).

 

Verify switching drawings, DAS map drawings, and one lines used by the Control Center are updated and accurate.

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range.  Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.

 

Apprentice Subtransmission & Distribution System Control Operator/Subtransmission & Distribution System Control Operator II: non-exempt pay grade 12 $35.22 - $44.03/hour

Subtransmission & Distribution System Control Operator I: non-exempt pay grade 13 $39.50 - $49.38/hour

 

Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska)  Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
