Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Apprentice/Line/Journey Technician - Transmission located at Norfolk Operations Center in Norfolk, Nebraska. Position closes March 31 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.
This position will report to the Transmission Supervisor.
Position Summary
This position's function is to climb wood poles, steel towers, microwave and radio towers up to 300 plus feet to perform repairs, maintenance, and construction duties as required to ensure effective operation of NPPD's Transmission Grid system in a safe and efficient manner. This position must make sound and logical, on-the-spot decisions, and respond to emergency situations, such as storm damage and equipment failures on short notice. Some overnight travel will be required.
Education, Training and Experience
Must have achieved Line Technician status with NPPD or obtained an official Journeyman certificate with another utility or contractor. External incumbents would be required to complete the Journey Oral Review as outlined in the Line Technician Progression Program.
Transmission Line Technician Progression Program.
Apprentice Technician - Entry level position.
Line Technician - Thirty months as an Apprentice Line Technician is the normal previous experience requirement (as outlined in the Line Technician Progression Program) for this position and the completion of the Line Technician written exam.
Journey Technician - Four years of combined experience at the Apprentice and Line Technician levels is the normal minimum experience requirement (as outlined in the Line Technician Progression Program) for progression to this position.
Licenses and/or Certifications
Must maintain Red Cross Community Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications, Pole Top and Bucket Truck Rescue certifications.
Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Ascend and descend wood poles and steel towers of any height, microwave and radio towers up to 300 feet to perform work, as required, in a safe and productive manner, and supervise less experienced personnel.
Perform hot line maintenance on transmission lines of substation voltages 34.5 KV to 345 KV using the hot stick method and barehand method and help supervise less experienced personnel. Capable of doing energized live line work using rubber protective equipment while working from an insulated bucket.
Concentrate and be fully aware of responsibilities while on patrol of transmission lines within the grid system and help train and supervise less experienced personnel.
Install, revamp, modify switches in proper adjustment on transmission lines and substations within the grid system and complete relevant documents.
Cut trees and brush in our right-of-way (ROW) and be familiar with and apply proper chemicals under proper and safe conditions in the control of trees and underbrush on the ROW clearance in the transmission grid systems.
Maintain favorable public relations with property owners, other District personnel, business establishments, and customers.
Safely operate and maintain tools and equipment assigned according to District policies and procedures and help train less experienced personnel. Operate and maintain mobile and hydraulic aerial equipment associated with construction and maintenance including digger derricks.
Supervise crew, as necessary, in the absence of the Senior Line Technician and/or the Supervisor.
Accountable for other duties as assigned.

In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range. Apprentice Line Technician - $39.29/hour
Line Technician - $47.15/hour
Journey Line Technician - $56.06/hour
Travel Required: 25% to 50% (With frequent overnight stays, more than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska) Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
