Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Engineering Intern - Subs and Distribution Lines Summer 2026 located at the Norfolk Operations Center in Norfolk, NE or the Kearney Operations Center in Kearney, NE. Position closes October 31, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.
This position will report to the Engineering Supervisor - Distribution.
Position Summary
Nebraska Public Power District is looking for an civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering student to work with and assist other experienced engineering staff in the Distribution Lines Department. The Engineer Intern will work through the 2026 summer session (May through July/August 2026).
The work location is Norfolk, NE or Kearney, NE.
NOTE: Intern position is available to undergraduate students only.
Education, Training and Experience
The student must be pursuing an civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering degree from an accredited college/university. At a minimum, the student must be finishing their sophomore year of college. The Engineer Intern will work through the 2026 summer session (May through July/August 2026).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Distribution Engineering duties may include assisting with designing overhead and underground electrical distribution systems (15kV and below), completing pole loading calculations, collecting existing field data, staking proposed designs prior to construction, and developing new and maintaining existing standards for distribution line construction and maintenance activities.
Accountable for other duties as assigned.

In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range. Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.
Engineering Intern - Junior - $26.80/hour
Engineering Intern - Senior - 28.72/hour
Interns may be eligible for $1000.00 housing stipend.
Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska) Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
