Electrical Engineer I/II/III - Production

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Electrical Engineer I/II/III - Production located at Gerald Gentleman Station in Sutherland.  Position closes October 7, 2019. 

This position will report to the Compliance and Controls Leader.

Position Summary

Entry to mid-level position with assignments designed to develop general knowledge of professional engineering practice in the electric utility industry and introduce customer/supplier communication skills.


The incumbent has responsibilities including daily support for operations and maintenance, trending system performance and initiating actions to restore/improve system performance and reliability, troubleshooting off-normal system conditions, failure and root cause analysis, evaluation of proposed configuration changes, recommendations to maintain asset value, and coordination of maintenance-related projects.


Incumbent’s core responsibilities include daily facility electrical systems support functions, protection system maintenance, and electrical reliability program ownership. Frequent additional duties include project support, design changes, and electrical studies.



Education, Training and Experience

Education and Training: Bachelor of Science Degree or higher in Engineering from an ABET accredited university or college or Professional Engineering License obtained by accredited examination.


Experience or course work on three phase electrical power system fundamentals and symmetrical components is desired but not required.   



Licenses and/or Certifications


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Applies standard engineering practices and techniques, utilizing prescribed methods in carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks.


Judgment is required on details of work such as correlating data and recognizing discrepancies in results.


Communicates with customers and suppliers.


Performance of a variety of specific tasks within each of the primary responsibility:

A general understanding of the process involved

A general understanding of the electric utility industry

The ability to manage personal performance

General understanding of economic/accounting principles

Prepare design calculations

Obtain field data

Utilize drawings

Develop design requirements

Prepare design calculations

Develop drawings and material lists.

Develop request for quotation:

Coordinate with procurement departments;

Develop cost estimates.


Modification or new design projects activities and associated skills which are required to design and implement new construction projects or modifications to existing equipment or systems.


Support operations and maintenance activities and associated skills which are required to provide technical support to the operation and maintenance of existing equipment or systems; troubleshooting, inspection and testing performance.

Salary Information:  Engineer Level I-Exempt pay grade 12:  $5,658-$7,147 Monthly 

Engineer Level II-Exempt pay grade 13: $6,346-$8,016 Monthly

Engineer Level III-Exempt pay grade 14: $7,217-$9,294 Monthly

Travel Required: Up to 25% (With no or minimal overnight stays, less than 3 per month, typically within state of Nebraska)  Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.
