Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has an immediate opening for a Station Operator Intern - GGS located at Gerald Gentleman Station in Sutherland, Nebraska.  Position closes January 19, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Central Time. 

NOTE: this position will work 12-hour rotating shift work according to the station's start and stop times.

This position will report to a Shift Supervisor.

Position Summary

The Intern's function is to learn and mentor from experienced station operators in the field for a period of time from mid-May to mid-August 2026. Incumbent must have successfully completed their first year (first two semesters) of college majoring in Energy Generation Operations from SCC-Milford or a similar/relevant field from another college.  The Incumbent will attend shift operations turnover meetings, complete basic coal-fired plant operations training, perform effective rounds while accompanying a Station Operator, perform lockout/tagout reviews, observe control room operations, and any other duties assigned to Station Operators.

 

Incumbent will be required to complete a background check, physical, and drug screen prior to starting with the District.

 

Incumbent will be required to report wearing safety shoes that meet ASTM F2413-05 specifications. 

Education, Training and Experience

Incumbent must have successfully completed their first year (first two semesters) of college in the Energy Generation Operations program from SCC-Milford or a similar/relevant field from another college.

None.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Complete any Station Operator duties while accompanied with a trained Station Operator.


Follow and adhere to all policies and procedures to ensure the work is completed correctly and safely.
 

Safely perform both emergent and scheduled work.

Salary Information - Nebraska Public Power District offers a competitive starting salary with opportunities for growth. In addition to the base salary range listed below, NPPD employees may also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program (AIP) that may supplement total compensation at a level above and beyond the stated salary range.  Successful applicants will be provided more information regarding the incentive program at the time of an interview.

Wage will be $28.76 per hour.

Travel Required:   Travel required may fluctuate by business need. This is an estimate and will be discussed further with candidates that receive an interview.

Retirement Savings

NPPD employees may participate in two retirement plan options – a 401(k) plan and a 457(b) plan. Both plans allow for pre-tax or Roth contributions. After the first six months of employment, the 401(k) plan includes a generous matching contribution from NPPD. The five-year vesting period begins on an employee’s hire date.
